Paleo health refers to a diet, lifestyle, and set of principles that encourage us to eat as we did in the Stone Age.
Paleo health involves optimising our bodies by using the foods that fuelled us before the development of mass agriculture, and long before the presence of processed food.
More than simply a diet, Paleo health can improve metabolism and blood sugar levels while reducing the prevalence of dangerous fats that circulate in the blood. Ultimately, these improvements could reduce the likelihood of heart attack, strokes, and even early death.
General Paleo principles include avoiding:
- Beans, peas, peanuts and other legumes
- Refined sugar and artificial sweeteners
- “Diet” food
- Trans fat
And eating a nutritious diet that includes:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Nuts and seeds
- Lean, organic, grass-fed meats
- Fish and eggs
- Herbs and spices
The Primal Approach
Much like the Paleo diet, Primal health, also known as Ancestral health, focuses on eating the same foods our ancient ancestors would've consumed. However, Primal health may allow for the greater consumption of coffee, dairy, and certain vegetables, among other things.
Primal health rejects foods such as wheat and corn, as well as baked goods, processed foods, pasteurised milk, and other items. Essentially, if it didn’t exist or wasn’t possible in ancient times, Primal health will actively discourage it.
Primal health may be right for you if you have diabetes, allergies or intolerances, coeliac disease or similar conditions, or if you'd like to lose weight. Equally, the primal health approach to dieting may help to reset your food intake and diet in general.
By adopting a diet based on primal or ancestral health, you'll be encouraged to eat foods that existed and fuelled the more active lifestyles of our ancient ancestors.
These may include:
- Meats and fish
- Raw dairy
- All vegetables, including starchy varieties
- Fruit, nuts, and seeds
- Wild rice
